The team at Mackin Talent takes great pride in the way they treat their employees.
“It’s one of the things that sets us apart from other staffing companies,” said Leniece Lane, Mackin’s Chief Marketing Officer in the U.S.
Mackin’s “Employee First” approach is setting the standard in employee recruiting.
“It makes a difference to our people,” Lane commented. “It makes a difference in how they work and the work that they do.”
An international staffing company offering contingent workforce solutions, Mackin is rewriting the playbook when it comes to outdated, entrenched views of temporary workers.
Contingent work has traditionally been viewed as less secure than full-time employment (FTE)—for both employee and employer.
But Mackin’s strategies illustrate how a contingent workforce offers employers flexibility; cost savings; an increased talent pool; reduced risk; and increased productivity.
The contingent workforce approach also carries benefits for employees, including expanded opportunities; a strong work/life balance; and unrivaled support.
At Mackin, that support comes in multiple ways, including:
Health, Dental and Vision Benefits: ”Every employee has access to the same benefits,” Lane explained. “Someone who is contracted in a staffing position with one of our clients has access to the same benefits that I have. That’s unusual. Usually, contract workers are offered minimal benefits. Many companies provide simply what’s required from a regulatory standpoint, or, if benefits aren’t regulated, no benefits at all.”
401(k): “Because of the nature of our business, there is no vesting schedule,” Lane said. “People aren’t always with us that long, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be able to save for retirement and plan for a future. With our 401(k) program for contingent workers, we make 4% matching contributions. That’s something that most people don’t have access to in traditional staffing positions.”
Paid Time Off: “We get a lot of comments about our PTO, sick time and holiday time,” Lane said. “Based on their time with a staffing company, contingent workers can typically get up to 15 days of PTO, but that usually includes sick time and holiday time. Mackin’s temporary workers can receive up to 20 days of PTO; plus they get 11 holidays and separate sick time on top of the PTO.”
Time off is of course based on how many hours a contingent employee works. But some contingent employees have been with Mackin for six-plus years, so the hours and days can add up. Also, Mackin allows flexibility, especially for new employees that haven’t accrued time off.
“If somebody starts with us in the summer, and they’ve already planned a vacation,” Lane explained, “we allow them to borrow a few days against future PTO or take unpaid leave to enjoy their vacation.”
Volunteer Time: Giving back to the community is important and Mackin wants to support their employees in those efforts. Mackin offers up to eight hours of volunteer pay annually. So if an employee enjoys volunteering, Mackin will pay their salary up to eight hours, for the time they volunteer.
Team Events: There are virtual events for Mackin contingent employees who work around the world. There might be just one Mackin employee in a whole business, so events like a company awards ceremony can go a long way toward maintaining team spirit.
Unrivaled Support: Mackin also offers support with individual Engagement Specialists.
“Each one of our employees gets what we call an Engagement Specialist, who is dedicated to them and meets with them each month,” Lane commented. “They can answer questions about benefits, help them work through any performance issues and create a personal development plan for long-term career growth.”
Overall, Mackin looks far beyond the bottom line.
“Supporting employees with these benefits and time off policies can relieve their stress and allow them to focus on their work,” Lane commented. “A happy employee is a productive employee— and it’s an employee that doesn’t go looking for something else.”
