Dollar Higher, Gold Drops In Europe

LONDON — The U.S. dollar rose Wednesday against other major currencies in European trading. Gold prices fell.

The euro was quoted at 85.17 cents in late European trading, down from 85.70 cents Tuesday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro traded at 85.02 cents.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Tuesday, included 123.25 Japanese yen, up from 122.73; 1.7896 Swiss francs, up from 1.7834, and 1.5311 Canadian dollars, down from 1.5325.

The British pound was quoted at $1.3941, down from $1.3996.

In midday trading in New York, the dollar bought 123.39 yen, and the pound was worth $1.3944.

Based on late European euro rates, the dollar was worth 2.2953 German marks, up from 2.2819; 7.6981 French francs, up from 7.6532; 2.5862 Dutch guilders, up from 2.5711, and 2,272.35 Italian lire, up from 2,259.09.

Gold dealers in London closed at $271.40 per troy ounce, down from $274.20 Tuesday. In Zurich the bid was $270.85, down from $273.35. Gold fell 30 cents in Hong Kong to $273.05.

Silver closed in London at $4.34 bid per troy ounce, down from $4.42.
