NEW YORK – U.S. stocks closed Monday with mixed results, as investors tried to pick up some bargains after recent steep losses in the market.
The Dow Jones Industrial average ended the day nearly unchanged, down three-tenths of a point at 9,606 The broad market indicator – the S&P 500 – rose seven points to 1,093, while the technology-rich Nasdaq Composite Index finished eight points higher at 1,696.
In London, the Financial Times Index ended the day down 37 points at 5,034, while in Paris the CAC 40 Index was down 30 points at 4,384. The DAX Index in Frankfurt was 61 points (1.3 percent lower) at 4,670.
In New York, the price of gold closed at $273.70 an ounce, down $1.40. The price of gold in London was at $271.40 an ounce, down $2.60.
The dollar was mixed against the other major currencies.
Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei Index fell 321 points (three percent) to close at 10,196, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index lost 18 points to end the day at 10,366.
