Podcasting, once a niche medium for enthusiasts, has transformed into a dynamic industry that resonates with millions of listeners worldwide. This audio entertainment has shifted and paved the way for a new era of storytelling.

But just like any burgeoning industry, it requires innovative strategies and visionary leadership to evolve. Apoorva Mishra, Senior Product Manager at ART19, an enterprise podcast hosting and monetization platform acquired by Amazon Music in 2021, stands at the forefront of this evolution, wielding technological prowess and business acumen to create a significant impact in the podcast industry.

In his role at ART19, Mishra is the single point of contact for product needs for two business groups. He’s solely responsible for creating product vision by understanding customer needs through research, documenting the requirements, and socializing the product vision to internal and external stakeholders through cross-functional partnerships, efficient project management, and finally delivering features to drive ART19’s primary source of revenue. Among his customers is Wondery (acquired by Amazon for about $300M in 2020), the largest podcast network in the US among other podcast ad networks.

“Podcasting is changing, and not just a few people control it. More people can create and sell content now, and we’re just getting started,” said Mishra.

The Fusion of Technology, Creativity, and Strategy

Mishra’s approach isn’t about forcing technology into the creative process but integrating the two seamlessly. He firmly believes in a fusion of technology and creativity, something he considers to be uncommon in the history of podcasting. His vision involves using technological advancements to empower creators, streamline processes, and create novel avenues for growth.

Working with ART19, Mishra has also prioritized the monetization of podcasts through innovative strategies, especially in programmatic and direct ad-buying products. His tech-driven tactics are aimed at optimizing digital marketing campaigns and identifying new revenue streams, catering to prominent networks like Wondery.

As the podcast industry is projected to grow to $10 billion by 2023, Mishra’s strategies play an essential role in tapping into this expanding market. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, he responds to industry trends and also shapes them.

The Global Perspective

Mishra’s extensive international experience in India, Africa, and the USA adds a vital global perspective to his strategies. This diverse background has honed his ability to collaborate with cross-cultural teams while infusing his tactics with a broader worldview. His global approach also informs his work in Financial Automation, where he has streamlined billing processes, reducing overhead, and minimizing errors.

Mishra’s work in empowering podcast publishers, including the likes of Wondery, has driven revenue growth. By automating advertising operations and publisher billing, he has brought efficiency and effectiveness to podcast and audio ads.

However, not everyone is enthused about the tech-driven approach. Some critics, like industry observers, warn about technology overshadowing content, which should be the heart of any podcast. But Mishra counters this by emphasizing the partnership between technology and content, rather than a rivalry.

“The conversation isn’t about technology versus content. It’s about how technology can enhance content,” he says, reflecting on his philosophy. His role at ART19 and his tech-driven strategies resonate across the podcast industry, promising to redefine podcasting and the broader intersection of business and technology.

In balancing innovation and integrity, Mishra’s vision presents a future where technology is not merely a tool but a creative partner. It’s a new symphony in the complex dance of business, technology, and art.
