Review: James Bay amazes on new single ‘Hold Back The River’ (Includes first-hand account)

Bay co-wrote the tune with Irish singer-songwriter Iain Archer. It is a track on his debut studio album, Chaos and the Calm, which will be released via his record label, Republic Records. It is heard regularly on the radio airwaves in New York City.

A Hitchin, Hertfordshire native, Bay was the 2015 winner of the “Critics’ Choice Award” at the Brit Awards, which are the British equivalent of the Grammy awards.

“Hold Back The River” has elements of folk, pop, rock, adult contemporary and indie music. This tune displays his wide range as a vocalist and instrumentalist, and it consists of chorus that is absolutely infectious. “Hold back the river let me look in your eyes, Hold back the river so I can stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back,” Bay sings.

The Verdict

James Bay is all heart and soul on his new radio single “Hold Back The River.” His vocals are crisp and haunting; moreover, they are reminiscent of such esteemed musicians as John Mayer meets Ray LaMontagne. He deserves to be the next big thing in music. His single garners an A rating.
