Interview: Chris Tomlin talks ‘Worship Night in America’ concert (Includes interview)

His recent sold-out concert garnered a rave review from Digital Journal, and Tomlin was able to share the stage with such musical guests as Louie Giglio, Max Lucado, Matt Redman, Kari Jobe, Matt Maher and Rend Collective. “It felt so good. My heart is full. It was my favorite concert that I have ever done, and I have done a lot of concerts in 20 years. I don’t think I ever had more fun playing music, and the joy of playing with my friends and leading these songs with the unity of all the guys onstage. I loved all the different moments, and this is what I was hoping for. It was just incredible and it couldn’t have gone better,” he exclaimed.

When asked which was one of his favorite song moments at Madison Square Garden, he explained, “I loved when we were on the acoustic stage in the middle of arena, when Matt Maher sang ‘Lord, I Need You’ and the crowd started singing the chorus, when he was trying to sing the verse. I thought that was awesome. The people took on the song themselves, and that was a great thing to happen.”

Tomlin’s latest single “At The Cross (Love Ran Red)” is at Top 10 hit on Christian music radio, sitting at No 9 on the Billboard Christian Airplay charts. “That song is moving pretty fast. It is definitely my favorite song on the album. I think it’s one of the most powerful songs I have been a part of in recent years. It’s a simple song about everything we have is because of the cross. It’s a beautiful way of sharing the gospel,” he said.

“I feel a great responsibility. I get to write songs for the church and to help people to worship God. That is what winds me up when I get behind a piano or a guitar, and the songs start coming. I am not interested in writing the latest pop song. I want to write songs that help people experience God’s presence and God’s love,” he explained. “To see that happen in Madison Square Garden is so beautiful since it involves years and years of relationships. We have a couple of more of those shows coming up this week.”

Tomlin revealed that he has a Christmas album that will be released later this year. “I am excited about that. We will finish up this tour in the fall, and then we will do a Christmas tour for this Christmas record. It will have new songs of worship and hymns. I can’t wait for people to hear it. It’s going to be special,” he said.

He is “grateful” for his fans and their many years of support. “I hope to continue to write songs that will connect with people’s hearts, and I don’t ever want to stray from that,” he said.

For Tomlin, the word success is twofold. “In my family, success means being a great husband and a good dad and looking after my family in the right way and making the right choices. In music, it is being able to take the songs all the way to the church, and the songs going way past me as an artist.”
