She is affectionately known as “The Forces’ Sweetheart,” and rightfully so. Her musical recordings became popular during World War II. She is best known for such classic hits as “We’ll Meet Again,” “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “The White Cliffs of Dover.”
Other major hits were “My Son, My Son” and “Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart.” In 2009, Dame Vera became the oldest living artist to make it to the top of the Billboard albums charts in Great Britain, at the age of 92.
Throughout the war, Dame Vera toured India and Egypt, among many other places, while performing concerts for the troops. She has devoted a great deal of her time and energy to charitable causes such as disabled children, ex-servicemen and breast cancer. In 1975, she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE), for her charity work, an honor that was presented by Queen Elizabeth II.
Even at the age of 97 years old, Dame Vera Lynn is still breaking records, as Digital Journal reported. Her 2014 album, Vera Lynn: National Treasure- The Ultimate Collection, went on to reach No. 13 on the U.K. album charts.
