Mark Kersten

Citizen based in Ottawa, ON, Canada. Joined on May 26, 2009

I am a 23-year old University of Guelph graduate in history. I also took a good dose of political science, economics and philosophy. For the first year and a half at UofG, I took biological chemistry, so I still have a soft-spot for science, especially genetics, evolution and neurology. My strongest interest, though, is International Relations, particularly human rights, the Responsibility to Protect Doctrine, and global governance and institutions. To continue studies in my area of interest, I will be attending the London School of Economics this fall to complete a masters program in International Relations.
I worked for the Green Party of Canada for 16 months during which time I had the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount about the current Canadian political landscape and how party politics works. During the last election I was the Assistant to the National Campaign Manager and got a front-row seat into Canadian politics. While my job titles changed, my interest and love for the ins-and-outs of the Canadian political scene has not. In particular, I am interested in Canada’s place in the world and it’s foreign policy, constitutional law, the state of Canadian democracy and Canadian-American relations. Of course, my job also allowed me to see and play in the world of political strategy, psychology, messaging and campaigning.
Despite having worked for the Green Party, I strive to judge everything I write within an unbiased frame. I don’t subscribe to any one philosophy or school of thought, nor can I paint myself on any side of the political spectrum. I believe in good ideas and sustainable policies more than political package deals. My view on the world is defined through the values and ideas I believe most important to the world: responsibility, transparency, accountability, justice and fairness.
Thank you for reading my work and enjoy the ride!
