It was able to knock off "Iron Man 3" at the top of the box office pile but wasn't able to hit the early projections. In fact, one could easily say "Star Trek Into Darkness" underperformed.

This is a crucial week for one movie. No, not “Iron Man 3” or “Star Trek Into Darkness," which boldly opens today. That film is “The Great Gatsby.”

With "The Great Gatsby" having a great opening weekend, it wasn't enough to stop the power of "Iron Man 3." But, the box office benefits in a big way as the top two films raked it in and sent the summer box office season sailing.

While not being released on the same day, it can not be a good thing for "The Great Gatsby" to play against the still strong "Iron Man 3."

It wasn't as big as "The Avengers" but it did beat "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." It would be "Iron Man 3" with a box office haul of $175 million. It completely dwarfed the competition.

It looks like the midnight showings of "Iron Man 3" did not match "The Avengers." But wait, that sentence doesn't come to close to telling the whole story.
