Kevin Thorbourne

Citizen based in Brooklyn, NY, United States. Joined on Aug 15, 2010

Kevin W. Thorbourne is a native of Harlem, New York. In 1999, he entered a training program at Cornell University School of Labor to train as a mediator. Upon completion, he was awarded a government contract to mediate workplace discrimination cases at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) where he had the highest settlement rate for over six years. Thorbourne's entry into conflict resolution came from years of sales and management including human resource and labor negotiations in the men's clothing industry.
In 1985, Thorbourne's love for footwear took him to Milan, Italy where he studied the leather business. Upon his return to the USA, he opened his own store in Hempstead, New York, Gillespies Footwear and Accessories. The company specialized in high-end footwear, outerwear, and accessories for men and women. It was a successful business for five years but due to the closing of the flagship A&S store and the influx of drugs in the community, the company was sold in 1991.
Thorbourne spent the next ten years working for the three largest men's wear chains, Today's Man, Custom Shoppe, and Men's Wearhouse where he staffed and trained sales associates in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. At Custom Shoppe, a company that specialized in handmade custom clothing for men, he managed stores and was responsible for HR issues. Thorbourne has formed his own mediation organization, the National Association of African American Mediators with the goal of finding a cure for conflict. Harlem Son is his first book. Thorbourne is the father of three sons, Kevin, Poppy, Derrick. He also has seven grandchildren. He currently
lives in New York City. Contact: 917 805 4869
