About John
John Dewar Gleissner, born Jan. 11, 1952, graduated with honor from Auburn University in 1973, from Vanderbilt Law School in 1977, and has been practicing law in Alabama since 1977. An insurance defense lawyer in Birmingham, in his spare time he wrote a book, "Prison & Slavery - A Surprising Comparison." His book, a 438-page non-fiction work published by Outskirts Press in Nov., 2010, compares antebellum slavery to modern mass incarceration in the USA and makes several reform proposals. Mr. Gleissner advocates letting prisoners work in private businesses at whatever wages they negotiate, free of all federal and state labor and employment legislation except OSHA safety regulations and some compensation for permanent injuries on the job. Under current laws, American prison-made goods cannot cross state lines . . . while Chinese prison-made goods enter the USA with impunity.
Mr. Gleissner has two daughters and has been attending the same church for over 20 years.
