AJ Allmendinger won his first ever Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday and secured his place among the 16 drivers who will battle for the series championship during the final 10 races of the NASCAR season.
The second road course of the season is this weekend at Watkins Glen in New York. With just five weeks to go in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, many drivers are giving it their all to secure a spot in the top 10 (and two wild card) slots.
Daytona Beach -
Jimmie Johnson accomplished something the NASCAR world hadn’t seen in over 30 years. The Sprint Cup points leader won the Coke Zero 400 on Saturday night to sweep the season races at the Daytona International Speedway.
Tony Stewart capitalized on a late penalty to Jimmie Johnson and passed Juan Pablo Montoya three laps from the end of the race to win the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks Sunday on the “Monster Mile.”
Kyle Busch was enjoying the moment after winning the Auto Club 400 on Sunday afternoon, while a short distance down pit lane a heated war of words escalated into a pushing match between Joey Logano and Tony Stewart.
Richmond International Raceway provided a thrilling backdrop for the close of the regular portion of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup season and 12 drivers are now in place as the ‘Chase for the Sprint Cup’ starts.
Daytona Beach -
Tony Stewart made a last-lap charge to win the Coke Zero 400 on Saturday night, but says he would trade all his success at the Daytona International Speedway in July “for just one Sunday race in February.”
Kyle Busch must really love racing in Virginia and, to prove it, the veteran NASCAR driver won his fourth-straight spring race at Richmond International Raceway, which was presented by “Virginia Is For Lovers.”
They had 91 victories between them going in to this weekend’s races. When the checkered flags waved, Fernando Alonso, Helio Castroneves and Tony Stewart all added another trophy to their respective showcases.
