The Earth has made its closet approach to the Sun for the year. The event that occurs every year in January is known as perihelion. This year, the Earth's perihelion took place on Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. EST (or Jan. 5 at 0100 GMT, depending on time zone).

Comet Lovejoy plunged into the Sun's corona at about 7 p.m. ET, on December 15. NASA scientists have announced that the comet survived the "death plunge" defying predictions that it would be completely vapourised.
