President Barack Obama has told park rangers to make life difficult for visitors during shutdown of the American government, according to a major United States newspaper. The same newspaper reported the rangers are upset by the situation.

Recently, it was discovered that the house was not white during George Washington's time in the home as had been shown for a long while, but beige. This past year the house has been redone to portray historical accuracy. In this photo, visitors wait for their tour of the mansion on Christmas Eve.

In the main garden I spotted some hummingbirds, but all of them were far too fast for me to capture. While trying to snap a shot of at least one of the three I saw, as the birds quickly darted away, I found myself distracted by the many pretty flowers in bloom.

A side view of Mount Vernon's kitchen. This structure was built in 1775 by George Washington in the vicinity of the main house. It was placed close enough for convenience, but far enough to reduce the risk of damage to the main house in the event of a fire. Currently, an archeology project is ongoing outside of the structure. Here you can see some of the team covering up the excavation at day's close.
