Op-Ed: N.D. pipeline leak heightens awareness of environmental disaster

North Dakota has been hit with another pipeline leak. This time over one million gallons of oil drilling saltwater, 10 to 30 times saltier than sea water, leaked from an underground pipeline and ended up in a bay that feeds a lake used for drinking water.

Environmentally conscious Hawaii bans plastic bags

About 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. Of that number, more than 380 billion are used in the U.S. alone. Plastic bags are a big business in the U.S., but the environmental threat posed by them is even bigger.
