Toronto Maple Leafs News

Leafs' James Reimer to start against Red Wings over Bernier

It appears that the Maple Leafs will be going with the hot glove hand tonight and starting James Reimer for their game against the Red Wings in Toronto. Reimer was in the 'home goal' at practice this morning, a strong indicator he's in net tonight.

Op-Ed: Multiple teams of NHL's Atlantic division are on the upswing

Over the last few years, numerous Atlantic division teams have populated the bottom of the NHL's standings. Let's take a look at the summer moves they made to change that.

Op-Ed: Change? What change? Can Toronto Maple Leafs win this year?

Maybe the more ardent Toronto Maple Leafs fan among you can provide the reasoning behind the notion that the team has made the kind of changes that will show up in the standings. That will vault them into the playoffs for the 2nd time in umpteen years.

Op-Ed: Do we really need analytics to tell us Dion Phaneuf stinks?

A new analytics-based study of NHL defenseman ranks Leafs' blueliner Dion Phaneuf in the bottom ten. It took a lot of work to come to this and other similar conclusions.

Op-Ed: What's the over/under on when the Leafs fire Randy Carlyle?

Toronto Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan has his fall guy in place headed into the season. But will he have to use him?

Hockey writer tweets NHL expanding by 4 clubs, including Toronto

According to a tweet from a noted sports business writer, the NHL will expand over the next four years by 4 teams, with new franchises planned for Seattle, Las Vegas, Quebec City and Toronto. Yes, a second team in Toronto.

Toronto Maple Leafs hire 'innovative thinker' and fire Poulin

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a new hire, inking the now former G.M. of the OHL Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Kyle Dubas. The club's new assistant general manager, Dubas is just 28 and was hailed by Leaf G.M. Dave Nonis as an "innovative thinker."

Op-Ed: P.K. Subban has more heart than entire Maple Leafs organization

What will the Leafs do if the Montreal Canadiens win the Stanley Cup? The discrepancy between the Leafs and Habs speaks volumes to Toronto's perpetual patheticism (my word).

NHL rumor mill: Leafs shopping Dion Phaneuf, Sens Jason Spezza

If you're a captain of an NHL team in the province of Ontario then it may be time to start packing your bags. That's because the rumor mill in the NHL, this time led by the in-the-know Nick Kypreos, is suggesting you're on the trading block.

Op-Ed: Unlike Canucks, Maple Leafs leave coach Carlyle twisting in wind

The situation with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks are roughly analogous. Each had a disastrous 2013-14 NHL season and missed the postseason, for the Leafs it was more of the same, for the Canucks their first miss in six years.

Leafs Brendan Shanahan doesn't give Carlyle vote of confidence

Toronto Maple Leaf fans are waiting to see if coach Randy Carlyle will join the Nashville Predators now former-coach, Barry Trotz, and be fired. There's been no word but new Leaf president, Brendan Shanahan, spoke about the coach he inherited.

Toronto Maple Leafs go out on a whimper, lose to Senators 1-0

The Toronto Maple Leafs ended a disastrous run — they lost 12 of their final 14 — and a disastrous season, going out with hardly a whimper in Ottawa against the Senators Saturday night. The Leafs were again outshot, this time 37-29.

Maple Leafs lose again, Drew MacIntyre misses first NHL win

In what may be the only chance at an NHL win, 30-year-old Drew MacIntyre lost. MacIntyre got his first NHL start in Florida against the Panthers after the Toronto Maple Leafs dropped out of playoff contention but, though playing well, Toronto lost, 4-2.

Brendan Shanahan will be named president of Toronto Maple Leafs

Much as their Canadian brethren to the west have done it appears the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to name a former player as their team president. There are some differences between Brendan Shanahan and Trevor Linden, but many similarities.

Toronto Maple Leafs to give Drew MacIntyre first NHL start at 30

After only being officially eliminated from the playoffs Tuesday night in Tampa Bay, most of the Toronto Maple Leafs might have trouble getting up for tonight's game in Miami against the Florida Panthers. But not Drew MacIntyre.

Op-Ed: Leafs demise is one based on high expectations, not failure

Following three straight years of missing the playoffs heading into the 2008-09 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs hired head coach Ron Wilson to return the team to a winning culture. What followed is one of the most confusing rides in professional sports

Troubled in Toronto: Playoff hopes fade in loss to Jets Special

Toronto - Emotions high after an encouraging OT win over the Boston Bruins Tuesday night, boo's rained down upon the Toronto Maple Leafs following a listless performance to the mathematically eliminated Winnipeg Jets Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre.

Toronto Maple Leafs win 2nd straight, put heat on Wings, Jackets

Momentum is a big part of sport and can be altered by one win, one play. The Toronto Maple Leafs saw momentum going in the wrong direction in a recent 8-game losing slide but their 2nd straight win Thursday may signal it going in the right direction.

Staying Alive: Reimer redemption in OT win over Boston Special

Toronto - Filled with energy and optimism just two periods earlier, tension crept near the boiling point late in the third period at the Air Canada Center Thursday night.

Leafs fan Flames in hopes to prevent year from going up in smoke Special

Margin for error the slimmest it's been all season, The Toronto Maple leafs snapped an eight game losing streak while playing host to the Calgary Flames Tuesday night at the Air Canada Center, keeping their playoff hopes alive for at least one more game.

Op-Ed: The problem with the Toronto Maple Leafs is not James Reimer

Toronto - Ten days ago the Toronto Maple Leafs were sitting pretty near the top of the Eastern Conference. Now after a six-game losing streak, the Leafs are clinging to the last playoff spot, and the blame is all on James Reimer.

NHL Scores: Kessel, Bernier lead Maple Leafs past Ducks 3-1

Anaheim - Anaheim came into Monday night's contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs looking for a win and a chance to take over the points lead in the NHL, but Phil Kessel and Jonathan Bernier ended the Ducks' hopes as the Leafs pulled out a 3-1 victory on the road.

Op-Ed: Ted Cruz deserves kick in tea bag for turning his back on Canada

Austin - Ted Cruz, the darling of the American right wing Tea Party, was born in Canada, but he is willing to give up hockey, Timbits and universal health care to try to become president of the United States - bad trade

Op-Ed: Maple Leafs need a reboot as their season is slipping away

For Toronto fans who watched the lackluster Leafs go through the motions against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday the bubble has burst. The Leafs have been outscored 18-5 their last three games and nothing suggests it will change anytime soon.

Toronto Maple Leafs ink captain Phaneuf for 7 years, $49 million

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed their captain and leader Dion Phaneuf to a long-term contract just ahead of the Winter Classic. Phaneuf, 28, will get $49 million US over 7 years, making him one of the highest paid defensemen in the NHL.

Report: Leafs Dion Phaneuf set to sign $50 million, 7-year deal

Multiple reports have Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Dave Nonis on the verge of handing defenceman Dion Phaneuf a whack of dough. One, from TSN radio, claims to know how much: $50 million over 7 years. That would make him one of the NHL's top paid defenders.

Op-Ed: Pulling James Reimer was a great move, after all - it worked

There was bound to be a controversy over the pulling of goalie James Reimer Saturday night in Toronto, and there is. Much of what's been written about it has been critical of coach Randy Carlyle's decision. But should it be? Was he wrong?

Winter Classic has host of events leading up to Leafs-Wings game

The NHL's 2014 Winter Classic, the outdoor game at Michigan Stadium between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings, is not just a single hockey games. There are other games and events in the days before the NHL game on New Year's Day.

Winter Classic to see classic goalie pads if Leafs' Bernier plays

Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor is a football venue and will have over 107,000 fans when the Detroit Red Wings meet the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Winter Classic New Year's Day. If they can see well they may see something new besides an outdoors NHL game.

Maple Leafs get back in win column after increasing forecheck

Toronto - The Toronto Maple Leafs got back into the win column after two demoralizing losses by using the shootout for a 2-1 home win over the Phoenix Coyotes Thursday. The Leafs had lost five of six and almost let this one slip away.
