Thomas Fire on track to become largest fire in state's history

The monstrous Thomas Fire north of Los Angeles is leaving its place in the state's record books as it is now officially the second largest fire in California history, consuming 272,000 acres (110,075 hectares).

Los Angeles - The so-called Thomas Fire in Southern California has grown to become the third largest fire on record in the state, destroying more than 1,000 buildings, including well over 700 homes, as well as taking the life of a firefighter.

Ominous-looking pyrocumulus cloud looked like nuclear bomb

Ventura - In a phenomenon only seen during the biggest wildfires, a pyrocumulus cloud, which resembled an erupting volcano or a nuclear bomb, was seen above the San Ynez Mountains of western Ventura County in Southern California on Monday.

Firefighters lose control as Thomas fire grows larger

Carpinteria - The Thomas fire in Southern California has now become the fifth-largest wildfire on record in the state. Containment of the massive blaze slipped from 15 to 10 percent as high winds spread the fire from Ventura County into Santa Barbara County.
