Is the Earth losing its magnetic field protection?

An open question in science is whether the Earth is starting a magnetic shift of the poles. If so, we may have hundreds of years during the transition where we are "shields down", since this field protects us from sun storms and cosmic rays.

Sun storms Headlines

The largest solar storm in five years passes Earth without incident, but the Sun's activity could flare up again, experts say.

A blast of particles from the sun hit the Earth just before 6 a.m. Thursday, but the resulting geomagnetic storm didn't immediately cause any reported disruptions to GPS and power grids.

The Earth is currently being battered by a storm of charged particles from the Sun, which could disrupt power grids, satellite navigation and plane routes.

Canada and parts of the northern United States may be in for a spectacular light show overnight, courtesy of the the sun's bombardment of Earth with radiation from the biggest solar storm in more than eight years.

Intense solar activity may affect Earth today, potentially disrupting radio and cell phone frequencies. On Monday, the sun released a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is a "massive eruption of solar plasma," according to Space.com. The blast is expected to impact the Earth through Saturday.
