On May 28, in Washington, D.C., in front of a live, prime-time television audience, Kavya Shivashankar correctly spelled the word “laodicean” to become the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.

Thirteen year old Kavya Shivashankar of Olathe,Kansas won the 82nd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Kavya was declared the Spelling Bee champion after she correctly spelled the word "laodicean".

Canadian Nate Gartke from outside Spruce Grove near Edmonton took home second place at this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee. Californian Evan O'Dorney took home first.
This is the second year in a row that the second place trophy went to a Canadian.
