It is understandable that the eyes of the world be turned towards Tunisia and Egypt, but meanwhile Iran is quietly and efficiently hanging people at an alarming rate. The tempo has increased since the New Year, with 66 victims as of today and counting.

She was not hanged today, but she could die tomorrow, or not, but no-one knows for sure, least of all Sakineh Ashtiani herself. This sickening and ghoulish spectacle is proof if ever it were needed that it's time to get tough with Iran.

The attorney general of Iran announced Monday that Sakineh Ashtiani Mohamadi, the Iranian woman accused of adultery and complicity in the murder of her husband, has been sentenced to death for the second crime and will die by hanging.

Carla Bruni, first lady of France, and French actress Isabelle Adjani have been singled out by the Iranian paper Kayhan as prostitutes and immoral women. This follows their appeal that an "adulterous" Iranian woman should not be stoned to death.

Iranian authorities have sentenced Sakineh Ashtiani to death by stoning on adultery charges. She says she was forced to confess to her crimes after being subjected to 99 painful lashes.
