Los Gatos - Shares of Roku that manufactures streaming media players and is incorporated in some TVs saw its shares drop more than 20 percent on Thursday morning.

Roku, manufacturer of streaming media players, has announced it's planning an expansion into home audio that will include its own digital voice assistant. The company will license its technology to manufacturers of smart speakers and soundbars.

Roku, which makes streaming video devices, has more than tripled since going public in November. Shares opened at an all-time high of $49.41 after getting a super-bullish analyst price target.

The stock, which was priced at the top of its range at $14 a share, surged on its opening day and finished Thursday's regular trading session up nearly 70 percent at $23.50.

Roku which has a number of different streaming media players and also is built into what are called Roku TVs will offer a new free channel that will have no-cost content from existing channels plus new material.

If Apple TV, Roku, Netfix, and all the other Internet streaming TV set top box isn't enough, then here comes one more. Unsurprisingly (or perhaps surprisingly) Google has been working on a set-top box to enable Internet capability on existing TV sets.

Roku's digital video player now can play Amazon’s Video On Demand (VOD) movies and TV shows. Users can play any movie title on demand from a collection of more than 40,000 movies.

Netflix has always been an innovator when it comes to movie rentals, but this one takes the cake: Free movies when you buy a $100 set-top box. With the download revolution just on the horizon, Netflix's move should really, really scare Apple.
