Tectonics on Jupiter’s moon Europa — another similarity to Earth

Moscow - Planetary geologists report evidence that Jupiter’s moon Europa shows signs of plate tectonics, shaping and moulding the moon’s surface similar to geological activity on Earth.

North America will collide with Europe in 220 million years

Geologists from Monash University have discovered a new subduction zone just off the coast of Portugal that will pull Europe and North America together into a single continent and spell the end of the Atlantic Ocean as we know it—in 220 million years.

How Amasia, Earth's next supercontinent will form

Supercontinents are land masses formed by merging of two or more continental cores. The Earth, in the geologic ages, has had several supercontinents. Geologists believe the next supercontinent will be Amasia, a merging of the Americas and Asia.

Ancient Rock Formations Support the Theory of Continental Drift

Harald Furnes, a geologist from the University of Bergen in Norway, discovered rock formations in Greenland that were formed 3.8 billion years ago, when the Earth was still quite young.

A new analysis from The University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics suggests a deep oceanic gateway, shown in blue, developed between the Pacific and Iapetus oceans immediately before the Cambrian sea level rise and explosion of life in the fossil record, isolating Laurentia from the supercontinent Gondwanaland.

Scientists have found evidence of plate tectonics on Jupiter's moon Europa. This conceptual illustration of the subduction process, where one plate is forced under another, shows how a cold, brittle, outer portion of Europa's 20-30 kilometer-thick ice shell moved into the warmer shell interior and was ultimately subsumed.
