Soviet scientists open the 'Door to Hell'
Fed by one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, the Darvaza gas crater in the Karakum Desert of central Turkmenistan is fittingly called "The Door to Hell" by locals. Aptly named, flames and the pungent odor of sulfur permeate the area.
Militants: 35 hostages held in Algeria killed in assault
Algerian security sources have told Reuters that 35 hostages being held at an oil field in Algeria have been killed. Fifteen kidnappers have also been killed, according to Al Jazeera.
Massive oil field found in Brazil
