Addiction experts are applauding new provincial restrictions on OxyContin and the drug replacing it, but say Canada needs a national strategy to tackle widespread abuse of prescription painkillers.

Law enforcement officials say a prescription drug epidemic has led to an increase in addicts and dealers targeting pharmacies for drugs such as Oxycontin and other painkillers.

Toronto Public Health says demand for referrals to methadone clinics in the city has tripled in the last week, after the prescription painkiller OxyContin was discontinued.


Some First Nations in Ontario report up to 80 per cent of their population is hooked on prescription painkillers, and they are looking to the land to bring healing.
