The Justice Department is suing Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office alleging the police force discriminates against Latinos, uses excessive force, runs its jail unconstitutionally and has taken illegal action to silence critics.

New Mexico's attorney general and a county district attorney are investigating to determine whether criminal charges should be brought against a sheriff caught on audio tape trying to force a deputy to release his friend from a DWI arrest. "We are looking at criminal wrong doing to see if there are any criminal charges to follow through on," Mora County District Attorney Richard Flores told ABCNews.com.

Three people in Colorado are dead after an emergency 911 system malfunctioned and failed to alert them to evacuate their homes ahead of a raging wildfire. The three victims had all contacted the Jefferson County 911 system to ask about the fire, but were not told by dispatchers to evacuate, and did not receive the automated notification in time to save their lives, according to Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Antolin Garcia-Torres, 21, the suspect in the kidnapping and murder of California teen Sierra LaMar, had been under police surveillance since March 28, hoping he would lead them to the missing girl. Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said his DNA was found on LaMar's discarded belongings.
