Toronto - On September 14, 2009 young Mariam Makhniashvili, 17, disappeared from her school. It appeared that the young girl had simply vanished with no clues to what had happened to her.

Toronto police say they believe Mariam Makhniashvili, the Toronto teen missing since September 2009, died following a fall from a "significant height."


A funeral was held in Toronto on Saturday for Mariam Makhniashvili, the Toronto teen whose remains were discovered last month after she had been missing for 2½ years.


The father of Mariam Makhniashvili had been denied permission by prison authorities to attend his daughter's funeral on Saturday. Vakhtang Makhniashvili was sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted on aggravated assault charges.


The country's top-ranked rhythmic gymnast won't be going to the London Olympics, and the decision to leave her off Canada's team has left Mariam Chamilova unsure about her future in the sport.


Mariam Chamilova is appealing to the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada after Gymnastics Canada told the top-ranked rhythmic gymnast in the country she won't be added to the team that is going to the London Olympics.
