This morning, people in Toronto experienced a rare event: a total lunar eclipse on the same day as the winter solstice. Only once before has this happened in the past 2,000 years, on Dec. 21, 1638.

The Winter Solstice, or the day that Old Man Winter is supposed to officially arrive, is on Tuesday, December 21st, at 11:38 pm Coordinated Universal Time (UCT), or in the Eastern Time Zone at 6:38 pm.

After the solar eclipse, a partial lunar eclipse is awaited on august 17th, visible from Asia, South America, Europe and Australia.
|
|
For those of us who love watching the skies, Tuesday morning will give a us a show worth seeing if our skies are clear. A total lunar eclipse will be seen in the Americas, Australia, Pacific islands, eastern Asia and New Zealand.

Saturday night's skies will glow with a red color, and if the night is clear it will be the perfect opportunity to see the a red lunar eclipse.
