Lakhdar Brahimi the UN and Arab League joint special representative on Syria is said to be planning to resign in the near future. He told reporters almost a year ago in New York that he thought about resigning every day.

The UN envoy and mediator in the Geneva 2 talks Lakhdar Brahimi apologized to the Syrian people for the lack of significant progress at the 2nd round of peace talks that ended on Saturday. The main agreement was to meet again.

UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said that high-level Russian and U.S. diplomats promised to try and keep the Geneva 2 peace talks alive as they are now at a deadlock after very little progress.

The Geneva 2 peace talks have resumed as of Monday February 10th. On the first day the two sides did not meet together but the UN Special Envoy met separately with each side and took messages back and forth.

Russia has said it doubts that the Western powers will be able to get representatives of the Syrian opposition fighting to topple Assad to the international peace conference that is scheduled to transpire in mid-November.

Immediately after his first meeting with president Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, the new UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi had a warning for the world: the Syrian crisis, he said, is now a dangerous threat to peace.
The Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi will now be replacing Kofi Annan as the peace envoy to Syria following the latter resigning after the failure of his six-point peace plan.
