US unemployment rate moves up to 9.1%, economy hits ‘brick wall’

Washington - The US Labor Department newly-released unemployment numbers for May show the nation adding just 54,000 jobs, the lowest number in eight months, and one chief economist noted the economy has hit a “brick wall.”

Canada's jobless rate rises unexpectedly

Canada lost 43,000 full-time jobs in October. The losses were a surprise and boosted Canada's unemployment rate to 8.6 percent. Part-time work decreased by 60,000 positions in October, with adult women and youth bearing the brunt of the drop.

Unemployment in the eurozone reached a record high again in March, as joblessness also rose in Italy.
Germany's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 6.8% in February, the Federal Labour Agency says.
The unemployment rate in the eurozone continued to rise in January, hitting a new record of 10.7%, the Eurostat agency says.

Spain's economic woes deepened alarmingly Friday as the government revealed that unemployment rising to near 25 per cent, a day after a credit ratings agency downgraded the country's debt rating and warned it faced an uphill battle to get a grip on its finances.


Canada's economy unexpectedly lost 2,800 jobs in February, although a surprising drop in the size of the labour force pushed the jobless rate down.
