U.S. new jobless claims hit highest level since mid-August

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week by the most in two months, to 898,000, a historically high number and evidence that layoffs remain a hindrance to the economy’s recovery from the pandemic recession.

Jobless claims report another sign employment market is booming

New York - The latest tally of weekly jobless claims showed a drop of 36,000 to 280,000 in the week ending Sept. 13, hitting the lowest level since mid-July. That mid-July tally was the slimmest reading since May of 2000, according to U.S. Labor Department data.

The U.S. economy continues to meander through its many challenges, with retail sales dipping and new jobless claims rising. Both events were unexpected.
