Report: Strong income security measures means a stronger Ontario

Toronto - Ontario's Social Assistance Review report, released Monday morning, called for Ontario to create a plan to ensure income security for the province, saying such a plan would help the economic recovery.

Details on how the government wants to change retirement income such as Old Age Security could be in the next budget, expected in March, said Diane Finley, the minister in charge.


Old Age Security won't be cut, but the government will take a look at the challenges facing the retirement income system, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday.


Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae says any change to Old Age Security would affect the Guaranteed Income Supplement and provincial social programs for seniors.


Greece scrambled Wednesday to adopt a batch of emergency laws that will further cut incomes and government spending, while revising deficit estimates higher, a day after securing a new bailout and debt relief deal designed to stave off bankruptcy.


The NDP says federal government budget cuts should avoid reducing retirement income for seniors, pointing instead to money planned for F-35 fighter jets, new prisons and corporate tax cuts.
