In a new update on the Larsen C Ice Shelf Rift, dated June 28, 2017, Project Midas scientists say that a speeding up of the breaking off of the soon-to-be-iceberg is another sign that "calving is imminent."
In the largest growth rate to date, the crack in the Larsen C Ice Shelf grew an astounding 17 kilometers (11 miles) between May 25 and May 31, 2017, leaving only 13 kilometers (eight miles) left before it breaks off.

There has been a significant change in Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf, with a new rift developing that is heading toward the ice-front. This indicates a near-future calving event.

One of the largest icebergs in existence – an ice island, really – roughly six times the size of Manhattan broke off from an Antarctic glacier and is currently heading into open waters.
