Vienna - Unchecked greenhouse gas emissions could see more than 90 percent of glaciers in the Alps disappear by the end of the century, scientists said Tuesday in new research.

The Earth's 'Third Pole' is thawing fast due to climate change

At least a third of the ice in the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush will thaw in this century as temperatures rise, disrupting river flows vital for growing crops from China to India, scientists said on Monday.

Chile denies a glacier spat has chilled ties to Argentina

Santiago - Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Saturday insisted he had no problem with Argentina despite its claim to extensive Patagonian glaciers along the joint but unmarked border.

'Year of extremes' for shrinking Swiss glaciers in 2018: study

Geneva - Despite an exceptionally snow-filled winter, Swiss glaciers have lost 2.5 percent of their volume this year, according to a report Tuesday which dubbed 2018 "a year of extremes".

Chilean environmentalists fight to protect glaciers from mining dust

Santiago - Chile is home to four-fifths of South America's glaciers and has some of the largest ice fields in the world outside the polar regions, but they are coming under threat from mining industry dust.

Himalayan glaciers granted status of 'living entities'

Dehradun - An Indian court has recognised Himalayan glaciers, lakes and forests as "legal persons" in an effort to curb environmental destruction, weeks after it granted similar status to the country's two most sacred rivers.

Snow algae accelerate glacier melting

Leeds - A new environmental study indicates that red pigmented snow algae are strongly implicated with the melting Arctic glaciers. Data suggests a 13 percent reduction of the albedo during one year was caused by snow algal blooms.

Blankets cover Swiss glacier in vain effort to halt icemelt

Ginebra - From afar, the Rhone glacier looks pristine, but on closer inspection the surface is covered with white blankets to slow the melting of the rapidly retreating ice.

Glaciers melt to lowest level on record: Study

Paris - Glaciers worldwide have shrunk to levels not seen in 120 years of record-keeping, with melt-off accelerating in the first decade of the 21st century, according to a study released Monday.

Over two-thirds of Mount Everest's glaciers could be gone by 2100

Kathmandu - If greenhouse-gas emissions continue to rise, glaciers in the Everest region of the Himalayas could experience dramatic changes in the decades to come.

Mars covered in hidden water-ice glaciers

As evidence continues to mount that life once existed on Mars, scientists have found vast underground glaciers covering much of the planet, which are hidden under a thick layer of surface dust.

Why Asia's glaciers are expanding, and not melting

In many regions of the world, glaciers, great rivers of ice are melting. From the Himalayan Mountains to other areas of our globe, we have documented the loss of glaciers. But there are regions in our world where glaciers are actually growing.

Greenland's Jakobshavn glacier retreating at record speeds

Ilulissat - One of Greenland’s largest glaciers is moving at speeds never before recorded. In the process it’s moving ice from the Greenland ice sheet into the ocean at record rates.

Mega-canyon bigger than Grand Canyon found below Greenland's ice

Scientists have mapped a previously unknown canyon entombed below two kilometers of ice in Greenland. The discovery was made by a group of scientists from Bristol University’s School of Geographical Sciences in the UK.

Video: New NASA animation shows Antarctica without ice

Sheets of ice one mile thick cover most of Antarctica, obscuring many of its geographical features. Now a new animation by NASA offers the most detailed and accurate picture yet of what the landmass would look like if all that ice were to melt.

Report: Mount Everest snow and ice melting at increasing rate

Researchers announced at the Meeting of the Americas in Cancun, Mexico, May 14, that snow and ice on Mount Everest and the neighboring area was melting at an increasing rate. According to the study, global warming is affecting the Everest environment

ESA’s new Biomass satellite to measure Earth’s precious resources

The European Space Agency (ESA) announced Monday, the selection of ‘Biomass’ as the subject of its seventh Earth Explorer mission. The planned satellite will measure, to great accuracy, biomass and carbon stored in the world’s forests.

Canadian mining firm faulted for environmental breaches in Chile

Santiago - The Court of Appeals of Copiapó, Chile, ordered suspension of the operations on the Pascua-Lama mining project in the high Andes due to environmental violations; the Toronto-based mining company Barrick Gold Corporation complied with the order.

Human carbon dioxide emissions could prevent next Ice Age

A team of scientists say that high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere could prevent the next Ice Age. The scientists say that even if carbon emissions stopped today, enough has accumulated in the atmosphere to prevent the next Ice Age glaciation.

Glaciers now melting at fastest rate in last 350 years

Aberystwyth - A new study on ice loss calculations shows some mountain glaciers are currently melting at a rate 100 times faster than at any other period during the last 350 years, setting the stage for major impacts on fresh water supplies and agriculture production.

UN estimates on mountain ice based on student's dissertation

The United Nations climate panel that had recently claimed that ice was disappearing from the Himalayas, based its assumptions on a student's dissertation.

Improved Carbon Dating shows Mammoths survived longer in Britain

Scientists have argued for years over the cause of the mammoths' extinction in Great Britain. Recent research shows that climate change and its effect on the vegetation was almost certainly responsible for the extinction of the mammoths.

Six-time World Snow Boarding Champion Died in Climbing Accident

Karine Ruby, a former Olympian and six-time World Snowboarding champion died Friday when she fell into the glaciers in France with a group of climbers. A man died and another injured in the accident

Shrinking Glaciers Reveal Hidden Forests, Warmer Climate

Uniquely old tree remains have recently been uncovered by the thawing of the rapidly shrinking Kårsa Glacier west of Abisko in Lapland, in northernmost Sweden.

Alaska's Glaciers Are Melting According To New Book

A new book published by the U.S. Geological Survey reveals that most glaciers in every mountain range and island group in Alaska is retreating, thinning or experiencing stagnation.

Melting Timebomb: Mountains And Water Supply

Every year the melt begins sooner, glacier and mountain snow melting in record time. By the time the summer rolls around with lower rainfall people who rely on that water are out of luck.

Study Shows Earth’s Superseason Of Warming Not Uncommon And Glaciers Can Survive

A study by the UC San Diego shows strong evidence that ice sheets smaller than the Antarctic Ice Cap can exist during extreme warm climate events. “Superseasons” are said to be a contributing factor in the earth’s natural variations in extreme clima

The diagram represents a typical glacier in Greenland. Below the cold, fresh layer near the surface a layer of warm, salty water reaches into the fjords to melt the glacier's edge. OMG will measure the volume and extent of this warm layer each year and relate it to thinning and retreat of the glaciers.

Mars distinct polar ice caps, but Mars also has belts of glaciers at its central latitudes – between the blue lines, in both the southern and northern hemispheres. A thick layer of dust covers the glaciers, so they appear as the surface of the ground, but radar measurements show that there are glaciers composed of frozen water underneath the dust.
