A South Carolina high school teacher has been suspended and could face possible termination after trampling the American flag during a lesson about symbols.

Desecrating the American Flag in America is a legitimate means of political protest, protected under the First Amendment, stated a Supreme Court Ruling in 1989. Veterans flying the flag, on the other hand, have been threatened with losing their homes.

Mark and Debra Kuhn of Asheville, North Carolina were flying a flag upside down on their own property with signs pinned to it explaining why it was being flown in that manner: being upside down represents a sign of distress.
