Dwarf planet Ceres contains organic material and possibly life

A recently published study reveals scientists have detected carbon-based materials on the dwarf planet Ceres. These organic molecules are considered to be the building blocks of life on Earth and it is possible life exists on the dwarf planet.

NASA Dawn mission reveals dwarf planet Ceres with crystal clarity

Pasadena - The latest images of Ceres, taken by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, show sections of this mysterious dwarf planet in breathtaking detail.

Mystery deepens over light spots on surface of dwarf planet Ceres

The mystery of the two strange light spots on the surface of the dwarf planet Ceres has deepened. New infrared images from the Dawn space craft are giving contradictory information, which has left scientists baffled.

Where to watch live images of Dawn probe arriving at Ceres

NASA's Dawn probe has successfully arrived at Ceres, entering into orbit around the dwarf planet at 7:39 a.m. EST (1339 GMT)

Bright lights on dwarf planet perplex NASA as probe nears

Washington - The discovery of another bright light on the dwarf planet Ceres has NASA scientists perplexed as the US Dawn probe prepares to enter the orbit of the largest object in the asteroid belt and possibly resolve the mystery.

NASA's 'Dawn' approaches dwarf planet Ceres, takes best images yet

NASA's Dawn spacecraft, which is about 147 million miles or 237 million kilometers from dwarf planet Ceres, in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, sent home the sharpest images yet of the body.

Dawn spacecraft homes in on dwarf planet

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is moving closer to a dwarf planet called Ceres. The spacecraft is expected to enter orbit in March.

Dwarf planet is possible new source of life in our solar system

A potential new source of alien life in our own solar system will be explored by a NASA probe in March 2015. Scientists think that the so-called "dwarf planet," Ceres, could have the right conditions for life to exist and may even be habitable for humans.

Kupalo Crater is one of the youngest craters on Ceres. The crater has bright material exposed on its rim and walls, which could be salts. Its flat floor likely formed from impact melt and debris. Kupalo, which measures 16 miles (26 kilometers) across and is located at southern mid-latitudes, is named for the Slavic god of vegetation and harvest.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft viewed this Cerean crater, which is covered in ridges and steep slopes, called scarps on Dec. 23, 2015. Such likely resulted when the crater partly collapsed during its formation. The curvilinear nature of the scarps resembles those on the floor of Rheasilvia, the giant impact crater on Vesta, which Dawn orbited from 2011 to 2012. The 20-mile-wide (32-kilometer-wide) crater is located just west of the larger, named crater Dantu at northern mid-latitudes on Ceres.

These images, from Dawn's visible and infrared mapping spectrometer (VIR), highlight two regions on Ceres containing bright spots. The top images show a region scientists have labeled "1" and the bottom images show the region labeled "5." Region 5 contains the brightest spots on Ceres. VIR has been examining the relative temperatures of features on Ceres' surface. Preliminary examination suggests that region 1 is cooler than the rest of Ceres' surface, but region 5 appears to be located in a reg

The fractured floor of Dantu Crater on Ceres as seen by NASA's Dawn spacecraft. Similar fractures are present in Tycho, one of the youngest large craters on Earth's moon. This cracking may have resulted from the cooling of impact melt, or when the crater floor was uplifted after the crater formed.

This map-projected view of Ceres was created from images taken by NASA's Dawn spacecraft during its initial approach to the dwarf planet, prior to being captured into orbit in March 2015. The map is an enhanced color view that offers an expanded range of the colors visible to human eyes. Scientists use this technique in order to highlight subtle color differences across Ceres. This can provide valuable insights into the physical properties and composition of materials on the surface
