Lanier Phillips, a black U.S. serviceman who has credited his 1942 rescue off Newfoundland as transforming his life, has died.


Lanier Phillips, the African-American civil rights trailblazer whose lifelong bond with Newfoundland was as strong as the rescuers who pulled him up a cliff to safety seven decades ago, has been laid to rest in Lithonia, Ga.

Cathy Hutchinson, who is paralyzed from a stroke, used a mind-controlled robotic arm to drink from a bottle. It is a system called BrainGate, which used a tiny implanted sensor in the brain to send signals to the muscles, bypassing damaged nerves.

Aaron Rublee won in a photo finish Sunday to capture the men's C1 200-metre race at the Canadian canoe/kayak national trials in Lake Lanier, Ga.
