The Edmonton Oilers areofficially the holder of the most undesirable streak in the NHL. The Oilers lost their 20th game of this shortened season last night and in doing so were eliminated from the playoffs for the 7th straight season.

The face of the Calgary Flames franchise and captain for nine seasons, Jarome Iginla has been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. A native Albertan, Iginla was a dedicated Flame and was instrumental in winning Olympic gold for Canada in 2002.

As of Tuesday, the Calgary Flames have a new goalie. The Flames picked up much-traveled Joey MacDonald off of waivers and announced number one goalie ,Miikka Kiprusoff, is out at least two weeks.

Right from the get-go this 2013 NHL season will be a sprint. The absence of 34 games will naturally make the 48 games each team plays, all in some 99 days, all the more meaningful and that could lead to surprises, in standings and in individual races.
