This is a crucial week for one movie. No, not “Iron Man 3” or “Star Trek Into Darkness," which boldly opens today. That film is “The Great Gatsby.”
With "The Great Gatsby" having a great opening weekend, it wasn't enough to stop the power of "Iron Man 3." But, the box office benefits in a big way as the top two films raked it in and sent the summer box office season sailing.
While not being released on the same day, it can not be a good thing for "The Great Gatsby" to play against the still strong "Iron Man 3."
It wasn't as big as "The Avengers" but it did beat "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2." It would be "Iron Man 3" with a box office haul of $175 million. It completely dwarfed the competition.
It looks like the midnight showings of "Iron Man 3" did not match "The Avengers." But wait, that sentence doesn't come to close to telling the whole story.
It could be the calm before the storm or a little pain before a big gain as the world awaits "Iron Man 3." But, "Iron Man" comes out next week.
Other matters came in to play this weekend besides taking in a movie in America, but sometimes getting away from bad news is needed.
Even though "42" is taking a mighty swing at the box office, it may have have to settle for the on deck circle as "Oblivion" arrives.
Get ready for the fun play on words as "42" scores a win. Terms such as home run, steals, pitches, and yes, scores, too. Or any other baseball term. And have it.
It is not always a good thing to launch two genre-related films within a week of each other but it might actually help "Scary Movie 5."
