NASA atmospheric scientists had an unexpected chance to study a curious phenomenon called "thundersnow" when a recent storm unleashed right over their heads.

The "instrument pen" at the National Space Science and Technology Center where researchers gather data on thundersnow sizes, shapes and fall rates. The facility is operated for the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission.
