FDA hearings into AquaBounty's genetically engineered salmon, AquaAdvantage got underway Monday in New York. One scientist has said he will be testifying at the hearing about the 'sloppy science' involved in the FDA approval process.

The US Food and Drug Administration has AquaBounty's genetically engineered salmon is safe to eat, and does not pose an environmental risk. The GE fish still has not been approved, but a decision is expected in the near future.

The biotechnological company seeking to obtain Food and Drug Administration approval to sell genetically modified salmon in the US was notified Wednesday that its application has progressed to the next, and near-final, stage in the approval process.

A genetically modified salmon which grows at twice the speed of a normal salmon is now being reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration.
