U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann ended her Swiss citizenship less than diplomatically Thursday, saying she was giving it up to prove she is a "proud American citizen."

The Harper government is considering changes to the citizenship rules to target so-called birth tourism — where a foreign national comes to Canada to give birth so the baby can get Canadian citizenship.

Immigration minister Jason Kenney says he only learned Thursday of a televised citizenship event in October in which federal bureaucrats posed as "new Canadians."
