Detail from The Arsenal, 1928, by Diego Rivera. Frida Kahlo is depicted in the center of the work, handing out weapons to peasants. If Rivera was dedicated to the vision of Mexico enjoying a socialist future, then he found his equal in Frida Kahlo, whose background and education provided a solid grounding for political engagement.
