Snapchat introduces ‘Discover’ in new update

A variety of editorial teams for some of the top media companies in the nation now have a way to share new content with Snapchat users. Snapchat users can now view the news through Snapchat Stories.

“This is not social media,” according to Snapchat.

The Discover feature allows the user to view content from popular brands such as CNN, ESPN, Comedy Central, People Magazine, National Geographic and others. These brands post “stories” that feature full screen photos and videos, providing a great opportunity for advertising.

The content put on the Discover tab is not based on the most recent or most popular topics nor is it based on clicks or shares. The content is chosen directly from what editors feel is important and popular, according to Snapchat.

“Discover is different because it has been built for creatives. All too often, artists are forced to accommodate new technologies in order to distribute their work. This time we built the technology to serve the art: each edition includes full screen photos and videos, awesome long form layouts, and gorgeous advertising,” said The Snapchat Team in a blog.

Discover is not much more than “stories” at the core, but these “stories” have been transformed into something new that’s more appealing to a variety of interests. Also, the Discover feature creates a more hands-on interact between brands and the user.

Discover stories are updated every 24 hours, in order to keep up with the latest news. Every 24 hours, each brand will replace the old stories with new, updated content.
