Skinny basic TV coming to Canada, will only be $25 per month

Cable and satellite service providers in Canada are getting ready to launch skinny basic TV plans by March 1. This is because the CRTC mandated that providers offer an entry-level TV package that offers local programming and whose price that doesn’t exceed the monthly limit, which is capped at $25.

At the least, 10 of a package’s channels have to be local or regional. Skinny packages will also have provincial legislature proceedings, if available. They will also have educational packages.

Service providers can add access to channels in the US, such as NBC, FOX, ABC and PBS. However, providers can’t increase the price of their package if they include such options.

Consumers can top their plan up with channels that are not included in their skinny package.

Rogers now has a basic package that includes channels such as CBC, City and Global. However, the company’s package doesn’t include 24-hour news channels or special offers for movie fans or sports fans. News fans can add theme channel packs for $5, which will give them CTV News, CP24 and BNN.

Last week, Shaw introduced its Limited TV package, which has around 38 channels, but customers can add five additional channels for an additional $15 per month.

As of now, there is no word from other major service providers on what they will be offering, but consumers can expect to learn what others have to offer within a few days.
