Shoes with screens let you customise what you wear

ShiftWear’s aim is to create a pair of shoes you won’t ever need to replace because the styling is getting old. When you get tired of a certain look, you’ll be able to instantly switch it out using the ShiftWear app on your phone.
There’s currently three different shoe styles available but they all sport the same e-paper tech. A flexible, HD colour screen on each side displays whatever graphic design or animation you desire. The battery lasts for up to 30 days and can be recharged either wirelessly or as you walk.
The shoes are waterproof to 5 metres and machine washable. ShiftWear doesn’t want to sacrifice on durability as a consequence of investing in its innovative wearable tech.
The ShiftWear app lets you download HD images to display on the screens. You can make your own designs and then upload them to the community, pitched as a kind of constant fashion show where you can sell artwork you create. The project’s Indiegogo page claims “designers couldn’t ask for a better outlet to showcase and sell their art.”

The e-paper nature of the display means hardly any battery is used when displaying a static image but more power will be required to keep an animation running. At night, a built-in backlight helps to keep the design visible. The ShiftWear app will be available on iOS, Android and Windows devices, letting anybody customise their shoes regardless of platform allegiance.
The team already has ideas to take the project further in the future. If sufficient funding is raised then they can begin to consider incorporating a touch screen and the necessary sensors to change the artwork design depending on the angle of the foot or speed of walking, creating a kind of interactive experience.

Self-described as “entrepreneurs, futurists and engineers who dream of disrupting the fashion and technology industries”, the team “will do everything in our power to bring you the coolest sneakers ever.” It said: “We are determined to make these sneakers take off and be seen everywhere. … You will own a sneaker unlike anything out now. Just think of the endless fun you can have customizing your shoes.”
ShiftWear is now at the point of moving from the prototype stage and towards mass production. The project has already received over 90 percent of its initial $25,000 funding goal with over three weeks remaining on the Indiegogo campaign. Retail pricing will be $200, $300 and $400 for the low, mid and full-height versions respectively.
