G-Technology takes on Lacie with super-rugged hard drives

The company offers its new drives inside an “ATC,” all-terrain case. Watertight, it allows the drive to float in water and survive drops of up to 2m. It is this that provides the majority of the G-Technology element survival features.
It can also be fitted to the older Evolution series of hard drives, giving a new rugged lease of life to your existing unit. Compatible with the G-Drive ev, G-Drive ev SSD and the new ev RaW, the case costs $80 for USB 3.0 connectivity or $130 with the addition of ThunderBolt functionality.
The new drive itself, the G-Drive ev RaW, is available in 500Gb or 1Tb variants depending on how much storage your needs require. The 500Gb version costs $100 — a competitive price for a rugged drive — whereas the 1Tb version, at just $30 more for double the amount of storage space, is even better value.
The ev RaW will ship with its own layer of protection enabling it to withstand a drop of upto 1.5m out of the box. A bright blue bumper can be attached to the drive, giving it a strong layer of shock absorption and making it more noticeable.
G-Technology are still trying to make a name for themselves in the saturated market for heavy-duty hard drives. The leading devices from manufacturers such as Lacie already have good reputations so the new range of G-Drives will need to put up a good fight. They are good value though and with the option to fit the new “all terrain case” to an older G-Technology drive, perhaps the company will be able to find some sales.
