Many more phones to get the next Windows 10 preview build

The current Windows 10 preview build for phones can only be used on a cherry-picked handful of compatible phones. Composed of newer devices like the Lumia 830, Microsoft has previously explained that this is because only these handsets have sufficiently large system partitions capable of holding Windows 10 configured by the manufacturer.
The company has been working hard over the past few months to create a feature that it is calling “partition stitching”. This will enable the Windows 10 updater to dynamically resize the system partition of any phone so that the upgrade can be performed on a much larger selection of devices.
Now Gabe Aul has said that this is nearly ready to go and has been incorporated into the main code. The team has spent the past week testing Windows 10 on a new range of phones and users of over 30 Windows Phone 8 devices who cannot run the current Windows 10 preview build should be able to download the next one.
Although only a preliminary list, Aul has published a list of potential devices for the next build. It includes the Lumia 1020 with its 41MP camera, the 6-inch flagship phablet Lumia 1520, the Lumia 1320 and popular older flagship devices including the Lumia 920, 925 and 928. Interestingly, support for the Lumia 930 – the most recent flagship – is not listed.
Several popular lower-end phones have also made it onto the list. These include the Lumia 520 – still the best-selling Windows Phone ever – and the Lumia 530, 535, 620, 625 and 630. A selection of mid-range 7-series and 8-series devices are also compatible. You can view the full list in Aul’s original post.
The news should please Windows Phone fans who have been waiting patiently to run the Windows 10 preview on their device. With a promise of faster releases soon, it shouldn’t be much longer until a new build is pushed out with new features and support for all these new devices.
