Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus revealed in leak, includes dual-lens camera

The images were uploaded by NWE today. They are said to show an iPhone 7 Plus pre-production dummy unit, detailing its design and the major differences between it and its predecessor, the iPhone 6s Plus.
As rumoured for months, the design is largely the same as Apple’s current handset. The phone is crafted from aluminium and finished in a selection of different colours. There are a number of standout differences between the two phones though, notably the design of the upcoming model’s case.
Whereas the 6s has visible antenna strips running across the width of its rear, the iPhone 7 finally does away with the unsightly plastic. Instead, Apple has moved the antenna bands to the top and bottom edges of the phone, leaving the rear free of adornment except for the Apple logo.
The change creates a much cleaner back that looks like a single flat sheet of aluminium. There are some important details though, notably the presence of three pins on the iPhone 7 Plus. These appear to be an Apple Smart Connector port, allowing you to attach external devices to the handset.

What the pins will be used for remains unclear. Apple employs a similar system on the iPad Pro to connect third-party keyboards. On iPhone, the Smart Connector could work with third-party cases to create smart cases capable of displaying notifications and alerting you when battery runs low.
Interestingly, Apple appears to be making changes to the layout of the iPhone’s physical buttons. The home and volume keys remain in their usual places but the unique mute switch is nowhere to be seen. This could vex long-time iPhone users who frequently silence their phone with the physical switch.
Another major feature shown off in the photos is the new dual-lens camera system. Earlier rumours suggested Apple had shelved the camera due to immature tech but on this dummy unit the double-lens is clearly visible on the iPhone 7 Plus’ rear.

The rectangular design appears to be large and bulky, standing out against the flat metal of the rest of the handset. It doesn’t match the rest of the iPhone’s chassis particularly well, indicating that Apple will either remove it before release or refine the design with future models.
One thing the photos don’t clearly show is the phone’s headphone port. Apple is widely expected to axe the traditional 3.5mm jack and replace it with a single Lightning connector. The photos do not help to confirm this as none of the angles clearly show the base of the phone.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are expected to be unveiled in Apple’s usual September launch window. Besides the design changes, the new handsets should feature improved performance, faster mobile data connectors and a minimum of 32GB of storage, keeping the iPhone ticking along until next year’s rumoured “iPhone tenth anniversary edition.”
