Facebook Messenger is getting a radical redesign with a new home

Since its launch, Messenger has followed the standard formula for a messaging app. When you launch Messenger, you see a list of all the conversations you’ve participated in, ordered with the most recent at the top. Scrolling down the list will reveal older conversations and continue to load additional entries until they’ve all been displayed.
The new Messenger is a major departure from the tried and tested standard. Facebook has developed a new modular design that it claims makes it easier to connect with the people around you. When you open the app, you’ll now see just the first four recent conversations you’ve participated in. This list will continue to work in the same way as before.
Below the recent conversations, you’ll find a new Favorites section. It includes a horizontally-scrolling list of people you’ve added to your favorites on Facebook, letting you quickly interact with your close friends and family even if you haven’t spoken to them recently. Messenger will now automatically add people you chat a lot with to the Favorites list, letting you restart conversations more quickly.

The third section, Birthdays, is something completely new. It allows you to quickly open a conversation with someone on their birthday, giving you a subtle reminder in case you had forgotten.
The fourth and final section is Active Now, a list of all the people who are online on Messenger at the same time as you. Tapping a friend will open a conversation with them, letting you see when people are available and immediately begin chatting.
The changes evolve Messenger’s design into something that is more unique than typical messaging apps. It may take time for users to adapt to the new version though since Facebook has moved several elements around. The scrapping of the simple recent conversations list may not go down well with people who are active in lots of groups and discussions as finding these will require a few more taps.
Facebook said it has made the changes to help you find new ways to connect with people and start conversations. The new features like birthday reminders and a more prominent Active Now section are designed to increase engagement on Messenger, making it more likely you’ll start a chat and remain active on the platform.
“With over 900 million people using Messenger every month, Messenger is the place where you can connect with the people and businesses you care about most,” said Facebook. “You can also now do more than just send and receive messages. From sending your favorite emoji (ours are brand new) to chatting with businesses, getting your news delivered just how you like it or making a video call — there’s lots to experience on Messenger.”
The update marks Facebook’s latest effort to extend Messenger and reach as many people as possible. In recent times it has introduced business support lines, a digital assistant and AI bots to the platform to make it stand out from the crowd. Messenger is now used by 900 million people every month, compared with over 1.6 billion on Facebook’s main website.
