article imageBritish woman's tweet about 'Barraco Barner' goes viral

By Arthur Weinreb     Mar 11, 2014 in Technology
Blackpool - What began as a statement of her concerns about the current situation in Ukraine, ended up going viral when a 20-year-old beautician from Blackpool described the American president as "our president Barraco Barner."
Gemma Worrall couldn't sleep so she turned on the television and watched the news, something she says she rarely does. After watching news about Russia and Ukraine, she became concerned and did what many people do; took to social media to express her concerns. On March 3, she tweeted, "If barraco barner is our president, why is he getting involved with Russia, scary."
Responses were swift and none of them had anything to do with Ukraine, Russia or the United States. Worrall was referred to as "a stupid cow" and "an oxygen thief" while another warned her not to breed. She was called "the dumbest person in Britain."
Although she deleted the tweet, others had saved it and within 12 hours it had been retweeted more than 7,000 times.
If all this wasn't bad enough, Worrall claims to have received 17 GCSEs (General Certificates of Secondary Education) when most people obtain 11 and says she is not stupid. This set off a debate about Britain's educational system and how someone with that much education could think Britain had a president, regardless of what his name is.
Writing in The Telegraph, Toby Young, co-founder of the London Free School, does not blame the young woman who, by obtaining 17 GCSEs and watching the news indicated she wants to learn and is interested in world events. He puts the blame for the tweet on the previous Labour government and the unions.
At first, Worrall laughed it off, saying the auto-correct function on her iPhone put the name barraco barner into her tweet. This does not of course explain how Barner or Obama or whatever his name is ended up as the president of Britain. She said she is not dumb and merely had a ditzy moment.
Now Worrall is concerned about the worldwide publicity she has received and striking back at those who are ridiculing her. In an interview with the Daily Mail, she says she is now concerned for her safety and the safety of her family. In addition to the nasty comments, she has received death threats that have upset the family, especially her 85-year-old grandmother. She claims a lot of the nasty comments came not from her age group, but from older people.
Worrall promises not only to be more careful on social media in the future but to follow world events more closely.
Since the tweet, a new Twitter account has been started, @BarracoBarner. Described as the "Official Twitter for the President of the United States of Britain," it also notes Barner is the "loving husband of michelleobarner." At the time of this writing, it has close to 2,000 followers.
